NHS breast screening checks look for cancers that are too small to see or feel, using an X-ray
test called a mammogram.
Breast screening is once every three years, for all women between the ages of 50 and 70 (up to
71st birthday). Invitations are sent out automatically, so it is important to make sure your details
are correct at your GP practice.
• One in seven women will develop breast cancer at some time in their life
• 80% of breast cancers occur in women over 50
• The risk of breast cancer rises as women get older
• 1,400 lives a year are saved through the breast screening programme.
If you are a trans man, trans woman or non-binary person, you may receive an automatic
invitation. This depends on the sex recorded on your GP registration, as screening invitations are
based on that information.
